Why Regular Tuning Matters
A piano contains around 230 strings, each under significant tension. Over time, this tension shifts—due to changes in humidity, temperature, and simple playing wear. Even a piano that sounds “fine” to casual ears may be noticeably out of tune. Learn more about how often you should tune your piano.
Regular tuning isn’t just about sound quality. It also helps maintain the structural integrity of your instrument and allows us to catch potential problems before they become serious.

More Than Just Tuning
When James arrives for a tuning appointment, he doesn’t just tune and leave. Each visit includes:
Inspection — A careful check of your piano’s overall condition, including the soundboard, action, pedals, and cabinet.
Tuning — Precision tuning to concert pitch (A440) using professional equipment and trained ears developed over 20 years.
Minor Adjustments — Small adjustments to the action are included, such as tightening loose screws or adjusting sticking keys.
Advice — Recommendations on piano placement, humidity control, and when you should book your next tuning.
When to Book
Annual Tuning — Suitable for most home pianos that are played moderately.
Twice Yearly — Recommended if your piano is played frequently, used for teaching, or if you’re sensitive to pitch accuracy.
After Moving — Pianos should be tuned 2-4 weeks after being moved to allow them to acclimatise to their new environment.
New Pianos — New instruments often need 3-4 tunings in their first year as the strings stretch and settle.

Caring for Your Piano
Between tunings, there are simple things you can do to keep your piano in good condition:
- Keep it away from radiators, direct sunlight, and exterior walls
- Maintain relatively stable room humidity (40-60% is ideal)
- Keep the lid closed when not in use to prevent dust entering
- Don’t place drinks or plants on top of the piano
- Play it regularly—pianos benefit from being played
If you notice any changes in your piano’s sound, touch, or appearance, don’t wait for your scheduled tuning. Get in touch and we can advise.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I have my piano tuned?
We recommend at least once a year for most pianos. If your piano is played frequently, used for teaching, or is relatively new, twice a year is better. New pianos often need more frequent tuning in their first year as the strings settle.
Is the tuning service only for pianos you've sold?
Our tuning service is currently offered to existing customers—people who have purchased a piano from us. This allows us to maintain quality and availability for those who have supported our business.
What's included in the £85 fee?
The fee covers a full tuning to concert pitch (A440), a general inspection of your piano's condition, and minor adjustments to the action. If any significant work is needed, we'll discuss it with you separately.
How long does a tuning take?
A standard tuning typically takes 1-1.5 hours, depending on the piano's condition and how far out of tune it is. Pianos that haven't been tuned for a long time may need a longer session.
What if my piano needs repairs?
If we identify any issues during tuning, we'll explain what's needed and give you an honest assessment of whether it's worth fixing. For major repairs, we may need to discuss options or recommend bringing the piano to our workshop.
